The last decades of the 20th century were difficult ones for steel manufacturing in the United States. From 1975 to 1985 alone the number of full-scale mills in the country fell from 47 to 23. The Middletown Works was one of the survivors, but not without undergoing significant change.
It was with this background of change that these portraits were made.
